Walking along the coast of Buenavista del Norte is one of the best ways to appreciate the majesty of its landscape. The blue of the Atlantic Ocean contrasts with the green of the mountains that rise up suddenly from nowhere.

Almost the entire coastline of the municipality can be explored on foot. It is a pleasant walk, breathing in the sea air and discovering beaches and remote piers where fishing was the basis of the economy for many families in Buenavista del Norte and where, if the weather is good, swimming is a real pleasure.

One of the greatest attractions of Buenavista del Norte is the possibility of enjoying the coast and the mountains in just half an hour. The coast can be divided into two slopes: north and south. You will find sandy and pebble beaches.

Among them are Las Arenas beach, Las Mujeres beach, El Fraile beach and Los Barqueros. On the southern slope, Masca’s beach can be found. Here you can only access it by descending its ravine or by boat. Punta de Teno is another spot to take a dip. It is possible to access it by bus or also by boat.

The majority of the coast of Buenavista del Norte is accessible by car or on foot. In addition to the beaches mentioned above, there are puddles and coves where you will see that our volcanic origin is also reflected in the coast. They consist of authentic lava oases where you can take a break.

There is a path that will take you from the centre of the municipality to the coast, in case you want to enjoy a complete visit. It is a simple route. You will pass through emblematic beaches that will tell you about the history of Buenavista del Norte.

What does Buenavista del Norte taste like?

Buenavista del Norte is a key Tenerife’s gastronomy. The quality of the local products together with the expertise of the restaurant sector have made it a gastronomic destination. From the coast, with top quality fish; to the midlands, with a large selection of grilled meats; the municipality offers different options for gastronomic lovers. There are exist approximately thirty options where you can taste the essence of Buenavista del Norte.

 

The gastronomy of Buenavista del Norte could be defined as product or landscape based gastronomy. The restaurant scene is closely linked to the products that come from each of its enclaves. A clear example of this is goat meat: an unusual product in the rest of Tenerife, but which is inherent to the municipality. Likewise, occurs with cheese made from goat’s milk. Other remarkable local products are the red onions from the Hamlet of Los Carrizales’, with highly regarded throughout the rest of Tenerife. Its wines are also well know, particularly those from El Palmar Valley.

One of the main characteristics of the gastronomy and flavours of Buenavista del Norte, is its variety. You can enjoy either good fish by the sea or grilled meat while admiring the green landscape and sipping local red wine. If you prefers tapas, pizza or sandwiches, you can also find them here. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life and Buenavista del Norte is well prepared to satisfy even the most demanding palates.

Teno Alto is another hamlet that preserves the essence and traditions of Buenavista del Norte. Located in Teno Rural Park, its green meadows contrast with the diversity of colours found in its different landscapes. Its most characteristic sound is the bleating of its goats, an animal that is one of its hallmarks. To them, it is joined the product par excellence: its cheese. Breathe in deeply and savour a delicious product made in the traditional way.

About fifteen kilometres from Buenavista del Norte, you will find Teno Alto. It is a sight for sore eyes, thanks to its variety and spectacular colours. The isolation suffered by this Hamlet for decades has turned it into a real cultural gem. Its intangible heritage is priceless, since it preserves customs and ways of life that only can be found in this part of Tenerife. The remodelling of its road has made it easier access. It is also possible to reach it on foot via the Risco path, starting from the town centre.

The Hamlet of Teno Alto has a very distintive symbol. It is about their goats and their cheese. Grazing continues to be one of its main economic activities along with the artisanal cheese production. This product has helped Teno Alto gain international recognition with various awards. Teno Alto has maintained the ‘Baile de Piñata’, celebrated during Carnival. At midnight, after some Canarian folk music, the piñata is hung up. Couples stand in circles dancing the ‘isa corrida’, a typical Canarian dance, while the women pull on the ribbons that will cause it to open and the gifts to fall out.
